The “Big Bang Theory” drinking game
Tags: funny, games, TV November 6th, 2009I love love love the Monday night sitcom “The Big Bang Theory.” It’s funny in a way that sitcoms haven’t been funny in a long time.
It’s also a show about nerds, and as such it draws heavily on the lore and culture – comic books, astrophysics, the Large Hadron Collider, all that good stuff. So I submit for your enjoyment, my Big Bang Theory Drinking Game:
Non-nerd version: You take a drink every time Sheldon says something funny. Warning: This is a deadly way to play the game, as the man has some of the best comedic lines anywhere on television.
Nerd version: You take a drink every time a joke is built upon some obscure nerd concept which you actually get. Take this exchange, for instance:
Leonard: Sheldon, why is this letter in the trash?
Sheldon: Well, there’s always the possibility that a trash can spontaneously formed around the letter, but Occam’s Razor would suggest that someone threw it out.
In this instance, if you know what Occam’s Razor is, you take a drink. Because you’re a nerd.
Another example:
Leonard (looking at the heavy box and the stairs): Do you have any ideas?
Sheldon: Yes, but they all involve a Green Lantern and a Power Ring.
So, you take one drink if you know who the Green Lantern is. A bonus drink if you can name the first Lantern (no, it wasn’t Hal Jordan, it was Alan Scott, you silly person).

I kid you not, nerd or non-nerd version, I would be blitzed by the second commercial. This show is, at the very least, in the top 3 funniest shows currently on television. I never miss an episode, and sometimes we watch reruns just because they’re there.

Thanks for the laugh. I don’t usually play drinking games but I love this show so much maybe I will change my mind!

a series which somehow manages to touch on the injokes and arcane knowledge that the characters it portrays should refer to in their speech.
