Hawkwind, PBS style

Tags: , , , , No Comments »

This is almost too awesome for me to process: It’s the James Last Orchestra, that bastion of PBS pledge drives and your mom’s house, doing Hawkwind. I just don’t know what to say.

Reminds me of the joke about what’s the difference between the James Last Orchestra and a goat: the goat has horns in the front and an ass in the rear.

But seriously: THIS IS INCREDIBLE:

This Fear Factory video is beyond badass

Something got me thinking about the band Fear Factory yesterday, a metal band I was into in the 90s but have totally slipped away from. Then I remembered how incredible the song “Resurrection” was, and how it had this amazing sci-fi video parable to accompany it.

Here ’tis. Enjoy four solid minutes of bad-assery:

Christmas lights + Guitar Hero = coolest dad ever

I’m not very good with the Christmas decorations. I’m the first to admit that. And I live next to some guys that are totally into it – like, they actually use ladders and stuff. Not me, boy, not me. I’ve got an inflatable Santa out front and some lights wrapped around the banister, but I am not getting on a ladder for this. I’ve got a high enough center of gravity as it is.

That said, this guy is probably the coolest dad ever – he evidently works for Disney Imagineering, with a focus on “non-screen projection, complex distortion correction, moving eye point, spatial illusions and scenic projection.” In other words, greatest job ever. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s a video of a guy in a horse’s head, dancing.

I have no idea what’s going on here, but I like it a lot. I think this person may be onto something quite genius. LOVE the song.

Rush, “Red Barchetta,” live in 1981

Here, fellow babies, we have one of my favorite songs of all time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to it, and it still amazes me. Such a great, imaginative story. Such intelligent lyrics. So much butt-kicking.

A barchetta, by the way, is a little Italian race car, the kind with two seats and no doors. The kind of car you picture Patrick Macnee driving while wearing a bowler hat.

But in this case, the barchetta is parked in my uncle’s garage, and it’s an unspecified date in the future when cars are illegal, and “gleaming alloy aircars” patrol the streets looking for delinquent petroleum junkies. On Sundays I elude the eyes, and commit my weekly crime.

I realize that not everybody gets or likes Rush, but man, they do it for me every time. This video shows you them at their very best … enjoy it!

38 Special!

38splive.jpgSome time back, I talked about my desire to dig back into 38 Special, a band that hadn’t crossed my mind in 20-odd years but suddenly was all over it. So get me to the record emporium, I did, where I picked up this little gem, thinking it was one of many budget-priced best-ofs that any band of such a pedigree and age must have.

But no, this was something far more. It’s not just 38 Special, it’s live 38 Special. And it’s not just live 38 Special – it’s 38 Special, live at Sturgis! Holy mother.

And you know what? It totally rocks. On the way home from the store, I had fun serenading my wife and kids with a totally gooder than hell rendition of “Caught Up In You” and “If I’d Been The One.”

There was at least one person in that vehicle having a good time.

I’ve since picked up another best-of, this one a compilation of the radio cuts. And it’s fun too. But there not much to compare with popping a disc in the player, expecting to hear one thing and instead hearing “38 Special thanks you, Sturgis!”
