Hawkwind, PBS style

Tags: , , , , No Comments »

This is almost too awesome for me to process: It’s the James Last Orchestra, that bastion of PBS pledge drives and your mom’s house, doing Hawkwind. I just don’t know what to say.

Reminds me of the joke about what’s the difference between the James Last Orchestra and a goat: the goat has horns in the front and an ass in the rear.

But seriously: THIS IS INCREDIBLE:

It’s Lost: The Sitcom!

Tags: , , , No Comments »

Ah, but this is great fun … everybody’s favorite metaphysical time-travel drama Lost, reimagined as a cheesy 80s sitcom!

Interesting bit of trivia: All of those cheesy 80s sitcom theme songs were written by the same guy, and his name is Jesse Frederick. The more you know!

It’s really easy, you see, because all television news segments are essentially the same. Here’s Charlie Brooker with more.

This Fear Factory video is beyond badass

Something got me thinking about the band Fear Factory yesterday, a metal band I was into in the 90s but have totally slipped away from. Then I remembered how incredible the song “Resurrection” was, and how it had this amazing sci-fi video parable to accompany it.

Here ’tis. Enjoy four solid minutes of bad-assery:

“Guess Who” played on 40 netbooks

Yeah, so it’s basically a commercial, but still gooder than hell … two geeks with 40 Nokia netbooks play a massive game of “Guess Who,” that game from your childhood where you try to identify the other person’s secret guy/gal. Only they play it with web sites rather than people.

Derren Brown predicts the lottery on live TV

Derren Brown is an “English magician, illusionist, mentalist, painter and sceptic.” He’s kinda like a blend of Penn & Teller, David Blaine and Criss Angel, but nowhere near as annoying as any of them. He does really amazing stuff using basic psychology, an understanding of human nature and the power of suggestion.

Let me tell you now, watching Derren Brown is a rabbit hole you will disappear into. You start watching for a few minutes on YouTube, and look up to find your Friday has disappeared. Truly addictive stuff.

This week he’s launching a new four-part series of BBC specials called “The Events,” and for the first one, he “predicted” the lottery draw, live on television Wednesday night. He promises to explain how it’s done in a one-hour special airing tonight (Friday). Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s a video of a guy in a horse’s head, dancing.

I have no idea what’s going on here, but I like it a lot. I think this person may be onto something quite genius. LOVE the song.

Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson Show

I think my irony meter must be busted, because I have no idea whether this is a real public access religion show, or a very convincing parody of same.

I’m leaning towards the latter. Either way, enjoyable in that “I’m going to hell for enjoying this” kind of way.

Nada Surf’s “Always Love”

A masterful pop/rock confection from the thinking-man’s nice-guy rock trio. This song is a few years old and the band has made another record since then, but the hook from this one is still ringing in my head. From the excellent album “The Weight is a Gift.” Hey you good ones!
